Mother’s Day Beads
Mother's Day 2012 in the UK is Sunday 18th March, and in the US Sunday 13th May.
During the 1600's, England celebrated “Mothering Sunday" on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter). Then, many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most were employed far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants had the day off and encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers.
In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe
as a day dedicated to peace. Until 1914 when Ana Jarvis, with the help of the
church, persuaded President Woodrow Wilson to make the second Sunday of May a
national holiday in honor of the anniversary of her mother’s death.
However, many countries celebrate Mother's Day at different times throughout the
year - except Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium who also
celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
What would mother like on her special day? Beads of course! Make a special necklace or bracelet as a gift for your mother and mother-in-law this year – or purchase one already made. Jewelry is always appreciated, and gains sentimental value with age allowing Mother to always remember who it came from. Pearls are great, but any pink or warm-colored stone jewelry would be appreciated!

Although I've been online since 1997, I've been left behind on some of the more-recent changes on the internet. However, I'm learning Joomla, which is light-years ahead of FrontPage for building websites, working on a new site and a blog. All should be out soon with a whole load of social media interchanges where YOU can participate and have your say. As soon as it's all up and running, full details will be on the newsletters.
On the new site you will be able to quickly search everything I have ever written and follow me around the world with daily updates. There will also be fast access to all types of up-to-date beading and gemstone information.
The success of a UK customer, Lorraine Cannell of The Bead Queen has inspired me to "get up to date" with my marketing. Although I joined Twitter a few years ago, I only sent my first tweet last week. However, soon I will be tweeting beading tips and help, plus publishing a blog on a daily basis.
If you would like to follow me, I have two accounts. One for personal international messages, like travelling (I never stay more than 6-weeks at a time in any one country) and other things at nigel@nigelmckay (this will be in US English) - and one just for beading and British news at nigel@UKMrBead (in British English). See the live Twitter feeds below (on the HTML version of the newsletter). Click "Join the conversation".
